About TypeDojo
TypeDojo started with a nine year old, a school laptop and a history project that took four hours, because finding each letter took longer than thinking of the word. Typing sits underneath every other subject in a classroom, and almost nobody is taught it.
What we set out to build
We wanted something that treats typing the way a good coach treats a sport: short sessions, honest feedback, and no score that makes a child feel slow. That became three rules we have not broken.
- Free, with no account needed to practise. A child opens a lesson and starts typing. Signing in only ever adds progress saving and certificates.
- No advertising aimed at children. The only thing we show a child is their own progress.
- Built for small hands and short attention spans. Lessons are minutes long, not hours.
How the lessons are structured
Every lesson follows the same shape, because the shape is what builds muscle memory. There is more about the method on the typing lessons page.
- A warm-up on keys the lesson already covered.
- New keys, introduced two at a time.
- Real words built only from the keys learned so far.
Where the grade levels come from
Our grade bands follow the speeds schools typically expect, rather than adult benchmarks scaled down. Accuracy comes first — speed follows on its own once the fingers stop hunting.
| Grade | Target WPM | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| Grades 1–2 | 8–12 | 90% |
| Grades 3–5 | 15–25 | 92% |
| Grades 6–8 | 30–40 | 95% |
Getting in touch
We read everything that comes in, and a good number of the changes on this site started as a message from a parent or a teacher. Feel free to reach out via our contact page.
